In the sixth grade my best friend was Brittany. We met in the fifth grade on the first day of school I was saving a seat for my other friend Abby but Brittney sat in the seat I was saving for her. I hated her for about a week but it turned out to be okay because we became friends quickly. We did everything together she came over to my house almost every weekend. We even memorized each other’s house phone numbers. Things started to seem strange, now at the time I didn’t notice until my mom started questioning me. Brittany and I had been friends for a about a year we hung out every weekend but I had never been to her house. Also, every time we did hang out my mom had to pick Brittany up from her house. My mom started questioning me about Brittany and her parents. My mom would always say “Does she even have parents?” The more I thought about it I realize that I have never even seen her parents and she never talked about them. So one day I asked her “Why don’t we ever hang out at your house?” She made up all these reasons why but it made me upset I didn’t think any of her reasons where valid. We ended up getting in a huge fight and not talking for two weeks.
Finally two weeks later Brittany called me and I was so excited I missed my best friend. We apologized and Brittany invited me to her house that upcoming weekend. I was so thrilled I packed my bag to spend the night two days early. Finally after all this time of being friends the day arrived that I got to go to Brittany’s house. My mom drop me off it was a beautiful sunny day. I met Brittany’s mom and she was really nice I could not understand why she did not want me to come over. I could not help but noticed that Brittany did not have a dad I thought her parents might have recently got divorce and she was embarrassed about it but it made me upset that she did not tell me she knew my parents were not together and that I lived with my step dad and mom. I quickly forgot about it. We had so much fun we played video games and redid our profiles on Myspace. We got hungry and decide to make ramen noodles. Next thing I knew Brittany’s moms boyfriend came stumbling in. He started yelling but you could not understand him because he was so drunk. He screamed at us for making ramen noodles. I was so scared I have never had someone else parent yell at me before. We went to Brittany’s room and hid. It took him twenty minutes to figure out that we had left the room. Once he realized he came charging to the room. He was in a full on rage he lock us in the closet for eight hours. Finally Brittany’s mom let us out when he left. I was so scared for my friend for her mom that was so friendly and for her siblings. I finally realized the reason it to so long for me to be able to go over to her house. My mom came and pick me up, as soon as I got in the car I told her what had happen she was mortified at what had happen. When we got home she called social services right away but they did nothing because they were financially stable and saw no reason to intervene. Brittany and I remained friends although I never went to her house again. She told me more about the abuse she had suffered.
